83 Chevy 4X4 with the 700R4. Place shifter selector in Park position all appears to be fine.
Shut engine off, remove foot from brake, vehicle freely rolls.
Happened a couple times over the last 3 weeks.
When it rolls no clicking sounds, acts like it's in neutral. Stomp on the brake, move selector to reverse than back to Park. All is well.
Linkage, linkage bushing, broken spring somewhere? About 200K after a major rebuild.
Rebuild was routine no surprises. Hasen't been abused. Suggests what to look for.

Sounds like the shifter is not properly adjusted. These 700R4's are very, very precise in the travel adjustment. I had to re-adjust mine about 3 times before I got it right. I got my shift kit from Lo-Kar and they include a device to help with the adjustment. Make sure you have your brake on when you start the truck. The truck can start while in gear if the adjustment gets to far off. Get the shifter re-adjusted and you should be fine. Cecil.......

RG,
The gear selector is easy to adjust. Park the truck on a level floor. Place gear selector in park. Slide under the truck and loosen the adjustment bolt on the bellcrank rod which goes from the trans to the frame. Make sure the selector rod is free and can move inside the clamp on the bellcrank. Now rotate the bellcrank up, until you feel it drop into the park detent notch. Try to move the truck to make sure it holds in park. Now go into the cab, and make sure the gear selector lever is locked into the park position. Tighten the adjustment bolt, move the gear selector lever from low to park a few times, then back to park. See if the truck holds in park.

Thanks for pointing out things to look for and how to adjust. After the holiday I will get under and do some serious looking.
Horror story told by a trans guy I spoke with.
Your Internal linkage is worn, close to failing resulting in no forward or reverse motion.
22 yr. old truck, get rid of it. In the meantime he's looking at his calendar, I have an openning in two weeks, about $350-$550 should fix it, plus fluid, filter, flush, lunch, snacks, wine for dinner... on and on. Fom this I sure can pull the pan take a look at the internal link and maybe see what if any is the problem. "Get rid of it" with that attitude where would I be with the 1948?
