That VIN indicates a 1950 3100 series truck made in Van Nuys, CA. Also the 262nd one made that year at that factory. That is all the info a VIN gives.

Brian,
I believe you mean Los Angeles, not Van Nuys ? This is what I'm reading per Chevrolet's restoration booklet:

First digit = assy plant
20 = Los Angeles
2nd digit = year
1950 was designated by the letter H
3rd digit = series
p = 3100
4th digit = Month of year mfg
L = December
The remaining numbers represent the production #
1262 one produced.

Actually, Van Nuys is pretty much a suburb or Los Angeles, so we are both correct, but GM's LA plant WAS in Van Nuys, opened in 1947, demolished in 1998. GM still has a presence there, I believe, a car-testing area.
And the sequence numbers started with the digits "1001", making the vehicle in question number 262 produced.
I know the restoration packets say Los Angeles, I would guess they considered the whole general area Los Angeles, as is frequently the case even now.
