Ideally I want to hang on to the original 3-on-the-tree shifter assembly and my closed torque-tube driveshaft. I have Patrick's 3:55 rearend and read in the catalogue about the saginaw 4speed being ideal for my setup. Is there a tranny with overdrive, that I can use with my original shifter and driveline? I have also seen overdrive add-ons. Is there one that would fit my original 3speed? I am thinking of having the overdrive lever on the floor right next to the bench, maybe. Is something like that possible or is that just a dream of an eager to learn beginner at this?

You are pretty much limited to what you can do because of the "torque-tube driveshaft". I haven't of an "overdrive" unit for the 1/2T, 3Spd - 4Spd trucks running the torque-tube. If you go to an open driveshaft your combinations open up quite a bit.

Just curious if anybody can provide a basic list of tranny models from memory about what can be used with or without open driveshaft on a 235 and 3:55 rear. Any hints?

Yep, it's limited, either the 3Spd or the 4Spd (SM420 with a very low 1st gear). The final drive is still 1:1.
