The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Engine Shop Going from 235 to 283

I am currently involved in swapping out a old tired 235ci with a 283ci. The 235 on my 58 had a wrist pin come out and catch the side of the cylinder. Total loss!! I located and bought a running 283 out of a 65 truck. I have started to install the 283 and have had to modify the bell housing. The next problem I foresee is the starter. The 283 has a modern starter and it looks as if I will have to install asimple starter circut/selenoid with a push button starter switch. I am not sure on the wiring and also I am using the generator from the 235 vice going to a altenato at this time. I will change later when I can use a complete wiring harness. Has anyone done this type of swap before and if so can you tell me the correct way to install the starter circut using the new seleniod?

Run a hot wire 12 gauge to one side of a push
button starter switch & run the other side to
the s term. on the selinoid. If you had afoot
starter on the 235 there should be a small wire
on the side of the switch on the starter. run
that to the I term on the selenoid. Or you can
change to a key turn ignition switch. The generator should work fine. Extend the wires
as needed.

Thank You Wrenchbender, I will give that a try. I am not using the foot starter as the engine has a starter with it. I will run the wire to the small post on starter bendix. Thanks for the reply.
