can any one explaine exactly what a syncroniser does. this is on a 49 3100 3spd. i try to put it in gear and it sounds like it's not engageing fully. i have had the shiftdoor off and it hits all the detents properly and is assembled exactly like the book says. with the shift door on the trans i can feel each fork fall into its detent position. still alot of noise and wont go any where. i am wondering what part the syncro plays here.
thanks,

Old Harley Mechanic

Sounds more like a clutch problem. I believe a synchronizer helps by spinning the gears at the same speed to help their meshing. Without it you need to rev the engine the same speed as the drive train is turning for a smooth shift.

However, when you are standing still, nothing should be turning. So, if you are having engagement difficulties it could be the clutch.

Tony,
i can completely disengage the clutch while the engine is running & everything seems normal. when i try to release the pedal and engage the clutch is when all the noise starts. sounds like one gear is just starting to mesh with the other and doesn't go any more. the only thing i can think of to do is to put it into different gears and pull the shift door and see what position it is in. open to suggestions.

Have you tried it in another gear? Depending on year first wouldn't have a synchro any way.

Edit, if this is a column shift the problem could be linkage slop.

2nd and 3rd gears are worse. i think iam going to remove the shift lever and do it by hand and see what happens. but if i can hear it go into the detents and feel it - it should be in the proper position. i'll pull the shift lever arms and see what happens.
thanks for the input.
