Need advice and I understand I can get it here. On my 49 burb where does the spare go? The under the rear bumper spare hanger was missing when I bought the sub or maybe the spare doesn't go there. I read an article that was posted I believe by Tim Lederman that shows the spare on a panel bolted to the inside rear left corner. Is this where mine goes? I have installed a 30 gallon gas tank between the frame rails just behind the rear crossmember. I also will be putting a trailer hitch back there so I don't think there will be room for a spare tire hanger there also. I think putting it inside ala panel would be the way for me to go. But how does it mount? How 'bout it Bolters, help me out here. Weeds

Don't know what kind of upholstery you have in there, but you may have to build a bracket to fix it to the body wall. Probably need a long carrage bolt or pick up a spare hold down from a junk yard.

You might consider laying it flat and building a platform over the top of it. This may give you better use of the space behind your last seat.

I think you have to get creative and build something that will suit your particular needs.

Weeds, first of all, what will be your rear seat arrangement? What size wheel and tire will you be installing? From what you state the new gas tank location is where the original spare tire went. Is that correct? If so, you need to find another spot and I don't think there is any other place underneath that will work.

Your original spare tire carrier for the 49, was the drop down type, different from the later carriers. Your's , was attached with a pivot at the rear and a j-hook that was accessible from just inside the rear doors. The later units were diagonal across the rear from left to right.

If you choose to use a space saver spare, you can probably mount it on the inside left rear. I would put it here instead of the right side, because the right side is where you will most likely go in and out of the most. Another idea would be to attach it to the rear of the rear seat.

Another idea is to join AAA and get roadside service, then you don't need a spare at all! grin

If you could provide more info, maybe others could give you better input.

My '54 Suburban's spare tire carrier is as GMONIZ describes.

I knew I would get some good suggestions. Thanks Tim ,Steve Gmoniz and Mike. I have 2 intermediate rear seats each having room for 2 passengers and can't seem to find the correct 3 passenger rear seat that goes all the way in the back. If I use one of the 2 passenger seats in the rear position keeping it to the right side of the truck I should have room for a spare on the wall to the left just behind the fender well. If the panel trucks had the spare inside on the left there must have been a bracket for it to mount on. If I could see a picture of the bracket I could fab one and keep the spare inside. Then again maybe AAA and the cell phone is the answer. I can't remember the last time I had to change a flat tire anyway so maybe I am just making more work for myself but I sure would like to see how that spare was mounted inside that panel. Anyone have a picture? Weeds

I don't think the panel trucks had inside spares, I think they had their spare mounted under the rear floor just like the Suburban. I like your idea of using the second middle seat and mounting it to the right and allowing room on the left to mount the tire. Take some measurements of the space that is left after you mount the rear seat. If my memory serves me, it's 14- 15" Maybe a side carrier found on the pick-up can be mounted on the inside left panel. It might be a close call.

Another thing to remember it's cold, it's dark and your parked on the side of the road. Do you want to take out the rear seat to get to your tire?

What about a suit case style tire carrier mounted under the rear seat? This way you can still store things on top of it in a pinch (There's not much room left anyway after the third seat is installed)

Back to one of my earlier ideas, finding a space saver wheel and mounting it either on the left side of the seat or underneath the seat with an upholstered cover? Do They make space saver wheels in 6 lug?

If you are going to pull a trailer or camper, just carry it in the trailer. For local daily driving, just take a chance on not having a flat.

Weeds. The mid 80's chevy burbs had the spare tire in an interior recessed well that was on the rear left side. I salvaged one from a buddy's burb that was going to the scrap yard and plan use it on my 49 burb. I haven't installed yet so not sure if there are clearance issues. Just another idea...

I'm still planning but thinking about having just the front seats and a middle seat, leaving the rest of the back for storage. I might build a platform off the floor high enough for a spare to go under it and build a storage pull-out box or two to go along side the spare. I just like having a clean dry spare when I need it.

I also like 49's idea on the floor recess.
