I now have the 84 GMC rear end installed permanently with new axle and pinion shaft seals and new drum brakes. I removed the front coils from the 84 GMC IFS and blocked them at ride height with 2 by 6s. I now have the lower control arms level. Next project is the steering box and linkage followed by shocks and the original front sway bar. The IFS has been narrowed 1 5/8. Do I have to narrow the steering linkage by the same amount or is there enough adjustment to bolt up? Need advice. Has anyone been through this with the Andereggen/Joyce late model IFS swap? Thanks to anyone who can help. I have come this far with help from all you guys and I am really happy with the results so far. The relay rod is the piece of linkage that connects the Pitman arm and the idler arm, and it must be shortened the same amount as the crossmember. The linkage forms a paralellogram as the steering moves from side to side, so the relay rod MUST be shortened. You will probably have to weld plates onto the frame on both sides, one for the steering gear mount, and one in the same location on the opposite frame rail for the idler arm. Jerry

Spaced it 1" away from the left frame rail and the idler arm mount bolted up without a spacer on the right side. Fitted up the relay rod and can see why it needs to be shortened. I will do that tomorrow. Looks promising. | | |
