The '58 apache I bought last year has a 1973 307 in it. It's a little tired but it has stopped smoking since I've been opening it up on the freeway. Go figure! I've changed the oil, put air and fuel filters on it( the previous owner drove it without them!)and it's time to address the old rusty spark plugs. It has an aftermarket? electronic distributor and I'm not sure if that should change how I gap the plugs. I think I remember an old post indicating they should be gapped wider than the typical .035. Any thoughts? thanks a bunch.

As long as the ignition system is up to par, .045 - .050 should work fine. John

GM initially went with a wide gap on the first HEI's, but had problems with arcing inside the distributor cap. They cut back to about .045 and stopped the arcing problems.

If you're using the original-equipment type cap and rotor, don't increase the gap much over the original setting. If it's .035" normally, you might try 40 or 45, max. Too much gap with close plug wire spacing in the cap will result in a crossfire occasionally. That's why the super-voltage systems went to big caps and fancy rotors, and 8MM plug wires.
