Over the last 2 days I have been able to fix the exhaust system and replace the muffler, fix the oil sending line, replace the leaking pushrod cover gasket and valve cover gasket, replace 3 studs stripped by the person who installed the tires on the front, paint the valve cover and pushrod cover and go shopping with the wife.
The coolest part is the muffler. I can now hear the engine. Of course we discovered the water pump bearings are making a bad noise. And after installing the gaskets I cranked the truck to move it out of the garage and noticed gas dripping from the fuel pump.
Dang. Fuel pump, water pump. I think this truck sat up longer than a couple of years. This explains why it stinks of gas all the time.

Is there a fix for this leaking problem? The connections seem tight. Does anyone recomend the dual action fuel pump to help the vacuum wipers?

If he hasn't completely closed down yet, get in touch with Gardner's Auto Parts on Trinity Lane, just north of Nashville. Johnny Gardner was in business for at least 50 years, and probably has more old stovebolt stuff in stock than you could haul away with a fleet of trucks. He will probably have a double-action fuel pump in stock, possibly one he bought back in the 50's when the truck was new! I've heard he's in the process of closing, and there might be some real bargains on NOS parts.

Old stock fuel pumps are not likely to last long with the modern gasoline/ethanol blends. Look for a replacement diaphragm kit or a modern pump designed for the modern gas. Time to replace the hoses as well on the fuel line too. wink

Good idea on the hose. It's nasty anyway. After painting the valve and pushrod cover all the nasty stuff is showing up brightly. Should I paint the fuel pump and water pump?

A little paint can't hurt either one, but it's generally not done on a fuel pump for some reason.
