After that I couldn't bleed the brakes satisfactorily and I finally found a small leak where the driver's side real wheel cylinder brass block attaches to the wheel cylinder. The brass block looks OK and the wheel cylinder is new but even after tightening the hollow bolt as much as I can it still leaks. Should I have been putting gasket sealer between te brass block and the wheel cylinder? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, JD | | |
#24277 04/26/2004 1:37 AM | Joined: Sep 2002 Posts: 115 Member | | Member Joined: Sep 2002 Posts: 115 | JD, there should be thin copper washers on each side of the brass block, one between the head of the banjo bolt and the block and one between the block and the wheel cylinder. They are the same as the washers between the hose ends and the front wheel cylinders. They should be 7/16" inside diameter.

No sealer of any kind should be used anywhere in the hydraulic part of a Stovebolt brake system.
Seems strange that a leak so small it took you several weeks to find it could cause that much trouble bleeding the brakes. You might want to check the master cylinder to be sure it is assembled correctly. If the residual valve at the bottom of the bore is not working properly it can make it very difficult to get the brakes bled.

Recently I replaced my brake system as well and had a leak at rear right, even with washers in place. Just kept tightening the infamous bolt until it finally realized who was the boss. Now, no leaks and it's working great.
