I got a engine I built and everything was going well ,till now.All of a sudden it makes alot of noise while cranking it over,once it starts the engine sounds good ,its just the cranking it over were it sounds bad.I put a high torque starter and a heavy duty flywheel on and it still does it.so Im stumped now.any help ,would be helpful, thanks

Bowtie I am not sure what type starter and volt system you are working on or what year....but check the answer that was given in this responce to a simular question yeasterday ..... click on it and see what he was told about flywheels and starters this is the one ..

the motor is a 1976 out of a 1/2 ton chevy,I put it in a 1970 1/2 ton ,the fly wheel; teeth is 169 and the starter bendix has 9 teeth. What I do not get is why it just all of a sudden started to have to have this problem.

morning bowtie.been thinking about your noise..hope you found out your problem... doesn't seem like you would have two bad starters in a row...... got me stumped now...will keep thinking about it ..will let ya know if i come up with anything else....good luck

This is a typical problem with SBC starters......They need shimming! Get a shim pack for it and experiment with different ones until the noise goes away.
Otherwise, I have had to grind on the mounting surface to get the teeth to mesh without noise.

GM should not have gotten away from the old three bolt starters that attached to the bellhousing.

Are you using the brace on the front of the starter (it attaches to one of the "long" bolts on the starter and goes up to the block. It prevents the starter nose from "warping" or twisting out of shape.

If you must have a two-bolt starter, try to find one with a cast iron nose. Much better

Hello, don't know if you took the starter back out, but this sounds like the engine backfired and broke the nose cone on the starter. Take it out and see Hope this helps...Chb46

well the starter is a high torque deco remy ,it has the cast nose cone,Iam not running the brace ,got to dig it out .but everything was fine at first,thats whats got me stumped.What would cause it to start.THe compression should not be to high,the pistonsI put in are about 91/2 :1,we ported and polished the heads and had them milled.Iwas trying to keep on pump gas without alot of preignition.teh starter problems are diving me nuts,I've put a total of 3 basic starters and 1 high torque,which is on it now.
