I recently installed a rebuilt steering box in my 56 3100... steering improved for about a week but then it developed a lot of play - like 25 - 30% - especially to left. Made the usual adjustment on the side worm screw and the front end and arms are all OK.
Is there another adjustment somewhere? Anyone ever get a bad rebuilt?

There is a bearing adjustment on the bottom end of the box but I doubt that is going to solve the problem. If the tie rods and the other components are tight and it has that much play, there is something wrong in the box. It's entirely possible that it was rebuilt with a questionable part that has now failed.

I think the adjustment Fred is speaking of is the bottom bearing preload for the worm gear. If this were the cause of your problem, it might be noticeable in the steering wheel itself. A gross misadjustment here would force the whole shaft up and down...trying to shove it into your chest or pull it away from you. As you turn the wheel back and forth, you would see any gap between the wheel and turnsignal cup get larger, or diminish. I think this is how it works.
