Well, I just mocked up my trucks motor for the first time and I am jazzed. When I bought my truck 34 years ago it had a 235 six in it (see photo below).

I could only dream of something like the motor I am building now. I am collecting all the goodies to make a 1954 Corvette motor, complete with three side draft carters. Now all I need is about 500 hours to get the truck done. smile

I know how you feel about the Corvette 6 engine. I have always wanted one, but now I have a 292 with 3 Weber Carbs, so it looks similar but makes a whole lot more horsepower. 3 sidedraft carbs are very impressive, good luck in getting yours together.

Brian,

That looks very nice.

Are you using the Corvetts's cam (the 261 cam)?

Will the carbs and air cleaners clear the steering column?

What type of oil filter will you be using and where will it mount?

Please post progress reports.

Tim, I don't know what cam I'll use. I will be running a manual transmission unlike the Vettes automatic, so there will be some need for a different cam than they had. The rear carb is VERY close to the steering column in my first check. My truck is apart, but I have a buddy with one and with some eyeballing with the manifold with carbs in my hand it is VERY close and doesn't appear to fit a stock truck. However, my truck has a 2 1/2" sectioned cab. So the steering column is going to be tilted down a bit and it should fit as is. If not, the column will be modifed if it is within reason. As far as I see right now, it isn't outside of the typical hotrodder we can make it fit plans. smile
The air cleaners are again, no problem, ANYTHING can be made at this point. The original Vette had a supercharged option that used a tubing arangment going to all three carbs, I could make something like that up.

I have an aluminum oil filter that mounts to the other side of the motor. Again, this is a hotrod and it will take some adaption. My old motor had a remote filter on the firewall.

what is the shiny tank looking thing to the left, in that picture? The top reminds me of a water tank for a radiator.... I honestly have no clue. Educate me.

If you are going to use the Carter YH carbs, you may find this tech page usefull unless you are already familiar with them. I believe it was written by Bob Helt, who is as knowledgable a Corvair and Corvair carb expert as you can find. As you may know the YH was used on the Corvair Spyder and Corsa Turbos from '62 to '66 and so parts and info is readily available from Corvair vendors and forums.
I am in the process of restoring a '65 Corsa 180 Turbo and will need to get back up to speed on the YH myself. There are two problems that most of the guys have with this carb that you can deal with while you are putting everything together. The accelerator pump housing, down inside the bowl is often warped and needs to be sanded or machined flat. The same with the bowl cover. Most guys set the float level about 1/8" lower to keep them from flooding over from heat soak and causing hard restarts.
The guys that report the least amount of troubles, use a small electric fuel pump and a Good pressure regulator, set at 3psi. The stock pump has too much pressure and a cheap regulator won't supply enough fuel at 6000rpm.

Carter YH

You may already know more about this carb than I ever will, but the Corvair guys are often also old truck guys and willing to help if needed.

That stand, looks like the HF one I have, they're not really beefy enough to hold a long six, designed more for V motors that are a lot shorter. I had my 235 sitting on one and about tipped it a couple times moving it. I've been gonna reinforce mine. Was planning on making the end with the swivel wheels wider and adding a piece to come up under the front motor mount.

Back on topic, your getting me fired up I have had a corvette intake like that hanging on the wall of my shop for several years begging to get used. Hmmm.. some kinda little hot rod.

That is the radiator tank! The Vette had no filler and a very thin upper rad tank, this one mounted on the motor is sort of an overflow tank that you would find on a late model car.

Richard, that you so much for the YH info. Do I know anything about these carbs? Not a single thing except they are getting harder and harder to find at a reasonable price!

My brother is a carboration expert and I just figure he'll set them up well. But that article will I am sure be very valuable to us. I have the reprint of the Vette carb manual, but that is all the info I had. THANKS

And MONGO, yep, that is the same engine stand from the Chinese Red Army store. I was going to add a brace to help hold the motor up. I did have one rear wheel fall off it and had to get a quality horseshoe clip to keep it on. But it doesn't seem to unstable actually.

It's in pieces all over the back yard, not much to look at.
This is basically it before the last tear down. I got a stock frame and traded off the Camaro clipped one that is in the photo. The rear will be lower than in the photo as well.
