Does the complete heater unit need to be removed to access the the blower motor for replacement? I see several phips head screws on the front, and they look like they're used to hold a front cover in place and I thought that removing them and the cover would let me get at the motor.

The cover is not an access. It covers the hole where the motor of the delux heater would protrude. You'll probably have to pull your heater.

I'm talking about the screws on the front of the heater itself, not the ones for the seal on the firewall.

I'm pretty sure you'll have to pull the entire heater. Pulling the halves apart might work, but I think it'll be a lot more difficult.

You pretty much have to pull it out. The motor fits into the housing from the back side.
