to all you bolters that have a 454 and a turbo 400 in you truck, what kind of mileage are yoy getting if driven in a sane way,the reason i am asking is i have a 58 fleetside that i have started on and i was intending to put a 350 and 700r4 in it, as it will be a daileydriver, but i have the option to do the 454 and 400 for free, the motor and tranny have 45000 miles on them and have been well cared for. they are out of my motor home that is 25 years old and it is going away, one way or the other. any input would be appreciated Mike Bourg

Mike, just my 2 cts.worth.The 350 and 700R4 is a very good way to go for mileage.Thats what I am running with a 3:90 rearend and Im getting 20 MPG.If you go with any engine,454,0r 350 and a 400 turbo, your gonna have to go to about a 3:08 rearend to get good mileage. The 700R4 is an overdrive tranny going about .78 to 1 to the rearend whereas the 400 Turbo is 1 to 1 ratio. Hope this helps.

I know of no one w/a big block that gets better than about 10MPG, my 350/700r4/3.42 gets 18mpg easy.

My 454/400 turbo has done as well as ten, but its in a 1-ton four-wheel drive. If mileage is a real concern stay with teh small block unless you really need the power.

And you can ship me the 454/400t!

As this thread concerns gas mileage I put this question to the bolters here: In 1981 AAA announced that the average cost per mile was .50 cents. That would include cost of the vehicle including interest paid, insurance, maintenance, and fuel. Does anyone know what that amount comes to today.
Knowing the "real" cost per mile should interest those that drive 60+ miles a day to work.

You get power or mileage, not both. I prefer power,

Boy ain't that the truth. My little Yota gets 30+mpg, but you can run faster than it will accelerate.
