Just a line or two to tell everyone my '62 one ton is being retired. My brother Dutch and I are building me a '74 Chevy one ton duallie(we named it Mad Max,for all the strange mods it had done to the cab and fenders) for a work truck,and the 355 from my '62 will power it.
I really hate the idea of sacrificing the '62,but I know it's the best thing to do,with all the highway travel I've been doing lately. The '62 is just sorta collapsing around me,(rust,$100.00 wheel bearings,and with all it'd take to make it strong and reliable,we decided to start fresh. The speedo,gas sender,windshield,seat,heater and doors are already spoken for,and there's really not much more that's worth saving,except maybe the 4.10 rear,front suspension,steering linkage etc.
I'll probably post an ad in the parts for sale later.
I'll be driving it to Reno on the 11th or 12th,and figure it'll take a couple of weeks to get Mad Max done and help Dutch do some other work.
The upside ia I'll have a longer flatbed,disc brakes,power steering,a HydraBoost(?),turn signals,a heater that works right,a horn,16" wheels,dual tanks,and gearing that should get me a little better gas mileage. Plus,parts for Mad Max will be a lot cheaper and easier to find,if I need 'em. I know-it sounds like I'm convincing MYSELF I'm doing the right thing. Maybe I am. I hate getting rid of a truck I have so much history with,but I really don't have a use for it now,or room to store it,and it can keep at least one other '62 on the road. And its heart will live on,in Mad Max.
So,if you please,on the 12th,a moment of silence for the end of an old friend,and a cheer for the arrival of a new one.
