Excuse me if this is a repeat, I've looked but can't find it.
I need a replacement starter for a '54 p/k.
It is a push button, I don't care if it stays or not. Whant years will bolt up to the orig bellhousing? It has the top stud and bottom bolt.
Not sure how many teeth. The brush contacts are wore slap out...........thnks :confused:

Stick or hydramatic? They are different. Manuals online, a free website has the complete '29-'54 Master Parts Manual available to browse. You should be able to get some part numbers. Six or Twelve volts, another consideration. You could have your old starter rebuilt with 12v. field coils.

It's a 3speeed column shifter.
The truck was converted to 12 volt before i bought it. They probably used the 6 volt starter and burned it out??? I will be using 12 volt stuff.

You can probably find a starter pretty cheap. They are on eBay all the time or try the swap meet.

If the windings aren't fried, and the commutator isn't too worn out, you can replace the brushes. I used to be able to find them in NAPA. My 6 to 12 volt conversion on my '54 bel-air would fry the brushes quickly, like every 6 months. Got tired of digging brush dust out of the starter, and got an electric starter and flywheel from a '60 235. Had starter rebuilt and bought a new 168 tooth ring gear from NAPA.

Or you can use a starter from a 55-60 truck, they were 12 volts and foot-mash. But you've got to change the ring gear, cuz the 6volt starters used a 139 tooth ring gear, the 12 volt starters used a 168 tooth gear. Flywheel, bellhousing, etc are the same for standard tranny models, 54-62 with 235/261.

I had a 6 volt starter in my 55.1 and was having problems, so my son gave me a 12 volt starter. We used the bendix gear from the 6 volt, by luck, and it works fine. My truck was converted or was already a solinoid starter unit. - Hope this helps - Scott
