My 51 Chevy 3100 has a 350 with 350 trans. and I am using the original speedometer. What kind of speedometer cable will work between the old speedometer and the 350 trans or will the old speedo even read correctly with the new trans?? It doesn't have a cable on it now so before I buy the wrong stuff I thought I would ask some experts. I don't now if I would need an original cable or late model or if the cables have stayed the same thru the years. Thanks!! mitchell

The cables should be the same. To get the speedo to read correctly, the drive gear in the trans will need to be changed to one that's correct for the rear end gear and tire size on the vehicle. Or you could also use a speedo adapter that has the correct gearing in it. United Speedometer can make one for you, they also can refurbish your gauge cluster to read to modern specs.

Click on "calculate speedometer" and all you need is your tire height(diameter) and rear end ratio. It will give you the needed drive gear(on the tailshaft) and the gear the cable plugs into. These gears are plastic, relatively cheap and available at any GM dealer.
