I have a 55 1st series 1/2 ton, and I just aquired a boat, When I brought it home
and attempted to back it up my GRAVEL driveway, I met with wheel spin on the
right side. Does anyone know of a posi or locker for my truck? I talked to a friend
who does rear end work, and he said I might try putting in extra thrust washers on
the side and pinion gears if possible. Any help out there???

Thanks, partst

Well, in high school, the guys with hot rod trucks just put a few bags of concrete in the bed to get the wheel planted. That would be the low $ solution.

Thanx for the input. A buddy called last night and said he has a complete
3rd member out of a '73 1/2 ton that is posi, although it has a tooth missing
on the ring gear. I'm going to do some measuring this weekend and see what
it looks kike. It will be hard to do this kind of change since the ONLY thing that
is not stock on my '55 is the 12 volt system!

If you can find a dana 44 or 60 axle that fits there are tons of lockers available for them. Another really effective low buck solution is to rework the parking brake scheme and add another lever so you can set each side individually. This lets you tighten up the brake on the side that is spinning and with a little practice gives you all the traction control that you will need. You could use old willys parking brake handles (They are the pull out from the dash type and twist to release) or toyota/nissan truck levers. If you need to fabricate emergency brake cables then find a speedometer shop. A local one here made me some really nice metal/plastic sheathed huck type parking brake cables for $40 each just copying the old ones. They even had heavy duty control handles that you could use in this application.

Lockers can give iffy wet road handling characteristics and are unnecessary in most cases.

Oh yeah, since it is a boat trailer, try shifting the boat forward on the trailer by 6 inches or so to increase the tongue weight on the trailer hitch. That will make it ride better too.
