Here's the low down: 1955 GMC Straight 6 302 Engine, bendix stromberg carb.

• She was runnig fine and stalled out a couple weeks ago, thought it was out of gas but when refueled the problems started.
• She would backfire and almost get going and sometimes kicked the engine backwards

Everything pointed to the timing.
Put in new plugs and adjusted the timing. Now she only starts when the choak is out and you push it in, will only stay running if you pump the gas or work the choke. The gas is getting to the carb, and a good spark. It doesn't appear that the carb is squirting out gas like it should.

I am thinking a clogged carb... possibly the timing still. What do you think???? :confused:

Check the fuel filter and pop the top off the carb. I would guess the sediment or water from the bottom of the gas tank is on the move.

You probably have a gummed up main metering valve in the carb. This exact thing just happened to me yesterday on a '58 **** 601 tractor. I also have a '52 GMC 6x6 with this engine but it has a Holley 2-V carb.

Remove the fuel line where it attaches to the carb, empty the float bowl, fill half full or slightly more with spray carb cleaner. reattach fuel line and run for a few minutes. This usually works. If the main jet is plugged with dirt this may work and it may not.

Todays junk gasoline will gum a carb out of operation in about three months especially if you let the gas tank get low. If your gas is old drain it all out and put in fresh.
