My dad and I are working on our '54. We are looking to put in a tilt column.

When I read about column swaps, people talk about having to shorten the donor columns. Is this because it won't fit under the dash on the mounting locations, or because some of us suffer from dunlaps disease and the donor column comes out too far into the cab?

How do you measure the length of a column when looking for a replacement? Is is from the rag joint to the steering wheel, or from the mounting location on the firewall to the wheel? Since the original AD steering column was integrated into the steering box, how did you measure that, and how does that compare to more modern column measurements.

Finally, has anyone ever for an early 90's S-10 column to fit in an AD truck, or are they just too short? The reason why I ask, is I may have the ability to pull the S-10 brake bracket/pedal/booster/master/steering if it would all fit.

I used a column from a el camino in mine, but I took all the s-10 stuff off of the donor that I could, power brake unit, all the brake brackets from under the dash, peddle and used it on mine. I don't know why the steering column wouldn't work also from a s-10. the only shortning I did tothe elky column was to change the molded braket that attached it too the floor. I would try to fit it in and see what happens.
