If any of his hiers are around, they can fill out an hiership form and apply for a lost title. The local DVM here is a big help. They can talk you through the proces.

I have found the best way to solve this problem is to walk in to the county tax office and throw youself onto the mercy of the person at the desk that handles title transfers. She deals with used car salesmen all day and would find you a refreshing change. They will work with you to get it done. Also, take a picture of the bolt and show her, like it was your first born.

I have to agree with Big Chev. If you have any option, go to the eldest lady in the office and bypass the 18 YO blondhaired gum-chewers. They don't know how to work the system, and furthermore, don't particularly care. There are ways to title, just be patient and work with them. If you can't get resolution at the county level, get on the horn to Austin.

Your close enough to Austin, Contact the regional DMV office in Austin they could help you out the most. I just got my Panel titled with no vin. Allot of folks told me it was going to be a big hassle but it wasn't, very quick, simple and for the most part painless. I had more trouble from the local office than anything else.

dbone,

I am not sure if this is what you asked but this is my experience from yesterday. I needed to get the license plates (tag) for my VW. I live in Collin County, north of Dallas.

My 53 chevy 3100 has no title. I do have a receipt from the PO. At the Texas State license and title bureau I received a copy of the "Application for a Certified Copy of a Texas Certificate of Title for a Motor Vehicle."

I can either send this to Austin or go to an office of the "Texas Department of Transportation - Vehicle Titles and Registration Division" which is located in Carrollton, TX. If the vehicle is not reported as stolen I can receive a new title on the spot (if I go to Carrollton).

I also checked on using the year license plates that I picked up at swap meets. They gave me the form to use and told me to bring in the plates for a visual inspection. I would then need to send a form to Austin to make sure they are not in use. And if all is well I could use the plates.

I hope this makes sense and is useful. I will keep you posted on my progress.

Well, I was wrong. Or at least the difference from the county license office to the State title office differed.

The State title office said their data base did not go back to 53. And without a license from the truck they could not check for a title. So, as dbone said/asked I will have to go down the bonded title road.

What I need to do is fill out the paperwork they gave me, provide a bill of sale, either use the State's estimate of value (approx. $19,000) or get an independent estimate, and get a bond from a bonding agent. Sounds like getting a friend out of jail.

Then take all that back to the State office so they can send it to the State and they will give me paperwork to take to the county license office to file then take a copy of that back to the State to get my bonded title.

Does that help?

I have learned that as soon as I bought the truck (and before I took it apart) that I should have had an estimate done. 1- they said the engine, frame, and body needs to be together - I have it all apart and the engine is ready for the machine shop. 2 - it will be worth a lot more if I wait for this process to be done after it is running and painted.

Oh - the title will cost less that $10. That is cool.
