i am assuming the vehicle id number on my title of my 1939 is an engine number(14991**). this does not match the engine number that is in the truck. the engine in the truck is a higher number. the number appears to start and end with a I, or is that supposed to be number one. if it is a number one than it would be (18255**). that would make both engines 1938s by what info i have seen here. can any body help me confirm this. thank you

The "I" would be a "1". Where are you looking on the engine for the number? It would be on a boss behind the distributor. If that's the number that you found and it doesn't match your title you'll need to contact your tag office to determine their procedure for obtaining a valid title. If that is your current engine number it looks like someone changed the engine out.

Thanks tiny,i got that number from the boss behind the distributor. The engine must have been replaced. I have been to my dmv twice and have not had much luck. I trailered the truck down to get a vin verification, and they told me it was not a vehicle, because it did not have fenders or a hood on it. They say it has to be complete. I am still trying to get an answer to what complete means to them. The cab is pretty muched stripped no glass or interior in. I hope i can get this taken care of soon, its keeping me from working on the truck for fear of not being able to register it.

I lucked out and used my "Fisher Body Number" that didn't even match the existing title. The ISP who came out loved the look of old "Rusty" and took care of me. If you ever have problems here'e a hint. Wait a day or two and call another District for help. Worst case scenerio you bring the truck to them to inspect/verify. Keep doing this till you find a "car guy".

...is there any metal left under there?

The VIN number as assigned by Chevy would be located on a plate on the passenger side cowl at the rear of the engine. If that's gone then yes, an engine block titling is possible. A correct VIN for a 39 1/2 ton would include a number for the plant of manufacture, JC (J being 1939 series and C being a half ton), followed by a number indicating what month in 1938 it was actually manufactured, followed by a number that would indicate what number off the assembly line the truck was. I'm lucky in that Arizona titled mine with a partial VIN that is missing the assembly line number.

If you go to the Inliner's site, the correct 39 head casting would be 838773 and the block would be 838941. I just noticed a new tech tip on the page though that says otherwise. However I was able to accurately date my (2) heads and block using the Inliner's site which has a link under the tech tips.

Does that help? I hope so!

Hey 39AZ3/4 Ton, I live in Tucson and have a 49, my question is the orig.vin tag had been removed and reinstalled by the pre. owner and I was told that I would need a level 2 inspection by the mvd here, I have a clean title(CA) from the pre. owner do you think that I am going to have a problem getting a clean az title? Also do I need anyhting special to help me out when I get this inspection? I don't want them to give a salvage title.

Go ahead and check your private messages, I have a few thoughts, but I didn't want to hijack the thread. Good luck!

fumblin46, good joke, i did get the vin #, but was treated like crap from the officer. he had no people skills and was a bad representitive of a chp officer. but i kept my calm and got what i needed from him. it just sucks when you have to bow down to someone who has the power and authority to give you what you need. and he didnt give me a sandwich.

rumplemtz, out here in california the chp only lets you take your vehicle to the area you have it registerd to. they say that is to keep people from shopping different inspectors. i had to change my address so i could take it to one close to where i am building my truck. but i was told buy an chp inspector that technicaly any office has to look at it, but you have to make a fuss and complain to get them to give you an appointment. i just went the safe route and did the address change.

39AZ 3/4ton, i had the vin plate on the cowel, but my truck was vined off the original engine number. my truck had an engine replacement so therefore i had no numbers on the truck to match the title other than the licence plate number. now i have a completly new vin number on a plate rivited on the drivers side door cab edge. im just glad to have it, so i didnt have to scrap my project.
