I have been driving a '47 1/2 panel for about ten years on and off. The wipers have worked o.k. in the past. I put a 3:73 rearend in from an '86 suburban so I could go fast(80mph). The wipers don't really press on the glass enough to work at high speeds in a downpour. I put on a newer wiper arm with the spring to hold it against the glass. Now the vacuum motor isn't strong enough to move the wipers back. I pulled out the vac motor and put some oil in it, that helped for awhile, but not enough. I have just installed a dual action fuel pump with vacuum generator. Ran the pipes, I like bending that tubing, it came out nice. Now when I start the engine, the gas flows out of the top and side of the carb like a fountain. I don't know if my old fuel pump was weak, and the new pump has found the carbs weak spots, or what? But I can't get it running long enough to test the wipers. I did a search here, and discovered, even with the vac gen, the vacuum wipers are not strong enough to move a wiper with a spring arm. And I need that spring arm wiper to hold the blade against the glass when I'm going 80mph in a downpour. So, it's time for electric wipers. When I opened the vacuum wiper motor and saw how it works, I was amazed. That is my favorite part of the truck. An engineering feat. Mechanically perfect. I guess I can put it on the wall and look at it. Was there a question... Oh yeah, does the dual action fuel pump have more pressure than, on second thought, I'll have a look inside that carb.

I would install a part # 54 Purolater Pro-Fuel adjustable fuel flow regulator. The kit comes with everything you need.Mine works best at 4 psi even pulling a load.

I agree with Ghostrider. Of course I have no desire to go 80 in a 60 YO truck on dry pavement with no other traffic.

I bought a kit for the 59" that has a delay switch and mounts just as the original. I found the ad in Custom Trucks. It was a little rich for my blood but it took all the guess work out and was a clean install. And Yeah I do love electric wipers. grin

Darn it! I just replaced that float, five years ago, with a sixty year old one. I may try that fuel flow regulator, but I want to go fast in a downpour. and now that I have shocks on the front it doesn't walk two feet every time I hit a bump at 60mph. As terrifying as it was, I continued to tempt fate. Keeps the blood pumping.

What kinda brakes you got on that thing? I still remember going down the freeway on the driverside 2 wheels in my 59 gmc. It was raining very hard, I pumped the brakes at 55 mph to slow down for the stopped traffic ahead, lost the back end, zigged and zagged a bit, and then proceeded to drive down the freeway at 45 mph with the passenger side up in the air. I still remember the look on the face of the driver next to me! grin Any way, I did manage to get it back on all 4 and stop without hitting anything, and I have a great story to tell. cool

I do have a new master cylinder, but original, one chamber, if I loose one they all go. It's worked so far. I do have to drive like I'm fifty feet ahead of where I actually am, a buffer zone to give me time to react. Two wheels, that will get the blood pumping. I was on two wheels once, took a corner on a country road too fast late one night. I think the limited slip differential helped me that time.
