The problem is the bracket that secures the check on the door is missing. I bought the door check from Jim Carter, and know they have a weldable bracket. I notice two tiny slits on the door like the orginal it must have had two tabs that bent inside the door, I really don't want to weld on the door if I don't have to.
Is there a solution to my problem? Where can I find an originnal door check?

You will need to drill a couple of holes in the door jam and the bracket. The bracket goes on the inside of the door and there are two tabs that stick through the slots in the door. These tabs have a hole in them that a pin drops through to attach the door check.
That's what I did with one of mine when I discovered it was missing after everything was painted.

George | | | | | Joined: Nov 2006 Posts: 110 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Nov 2006 Posts: 110 | Dumb me I didn't think about running two screws or bolts through the plate! the funny thing is there are two slots in the area the original plate was at giving me the idea they had tabs that fit into the door and you twisted the tab to secure them. Why did JC make them weld or bolt on?? It reminds me of the tabs that hold the Stainless Steel decorative strips on the hood. I'd prefer not to drill any holes, but it's better than the weld on idea on my paint!
Thanks for the great idea. I'm not in a hurry and hope someone can shed some light about the original unit with the tabs and where it can be bought!

I would think if you just twisted a tab on the inside of a slot in the door after awhile with enough bumps and pulls from the check strap it would straghten and pull back thru. just my .02 | | | | | Joined: Nov 2006 Posts: 110 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Nov 2006 Posts: 110 | I'm sure you are right, but I don't notice the tack welds on the passenger side door, and the driver side has no check bracket and there are two horizontal slots, which I assumed were used with tabs to secure the check. Seems a bit odd, but I need to look closer on the one that is complete on the passenger side! When I get the truck repainted I’ll get them to tack weld one on, but I don’t want to do it now!
