Next question, what tranny to put behind it? I'm not picky about auto or manual. The future of the little truck will be a mild hot rod/daily driver. What tranny should I look for now so I won't have to get a different one later???

#23344 08/07/2002 7:19 PM | Joined: Feb 2001 Posts: 1,897 Member | | Member Joined: Feb 2001 Posts: 1,897 | Even though you may not be too hot on automatics, I would suggest the Powerglide 2-speed trans.Really tough(used in drag racing).It works well behind the 283.Used to have a 64 Impala and a 67 Impala,both were getting around 23 to 28 mpg.They would also wind up to 75mph+ in first gear with no problem behind the 283 
There is enough good in the worst of us and enough bad in the best of us that it does not behoove any of us to criticize the rest of us.

I agree entirely and explicably with the Mech. There are some inexpensive kits around to touch up the'Glide depending on what you want it to do -haul a load, race it or a couple other options. Find a good one and Go'Glide!

Powerglide is about indestructable used to rev my dads 63 chevy up and slam it in gear to smoke the tires and the trans never had a problem. I have a 283 with cam headers and high rise in front of the Powerglide and 354 rear in 65 GMC. It does ok no power till about 40mh then it's like two extra cylinder came on line. I've had it to 90 in low and think it would hit 100. I believe a 700r4 would be perfect in my truck and give me tire burning take off with great gas mileage on the highway. | | |
