Can anyone tell me the proper location for a radio antenna on a 52 3100?

Here's a template for the factory location and this worked perfect for me:

I think there was a recent post on the subject of antenna location. The person didn't have the nice template Curt linked, but eyeballed it pretty close...then they opened the hood and saw how close they came to disaster.

Antennas were shipped to the dealer in trunks of cars and cabs of trucks and installed by a "get ready man". I wish I had a dollar for all I installed during my stint in that position. Many times the buyer would request the antenna be placed in other locations than that recommended by the manufacturer.

You can purchase a "hidden" antenna, so you dont have to drill new holes. Hooks up to the old "style" radios as well.....

That was me, Stuart. I had the template but I did wonder at the time why it was so close to the cowl bulge.

I found out why it was so close later when I opened the hood.

My truck has a hole in the cab where the PO put it. It hit the hood. Its got a chrome plug in it now but I'm going to patch it up right when I repaint it.

I saw a neat way to get around 4ontheFloor's problem. The guy had an electric antenna. He had an internal regulated alternator and didn't need the generator regulator so he gutted it and put a push button switch in it. I forget what kind of mechanism did it but when the hood closed it closed the switch so the antenna could operate normally. With the hood open so was the switch, breaking the circuit. If he turned on the ignition without remembering to turn off the radio, no damage done.

I drilled the antenna hole even before priming,
and of course there was no hood on either, but
I never dreamed it would cause Me any problems..
It would have been nice to have a template to
locate exactly where it goes...I just bought an antenna with a screw-off mast, then when I raise
the hood I'll have to un-screw the mast...Bill B

I just purchased an original repop antenna from the Truckshop and the rubber washer that goes between the mast base and the cab has a raised rib around the outside, like almost all washers I have seen for this type of application. Except here, it only goes around maybe 3/4's of the way around and is just flat at the remaining 1/4. Is this just a defect, or is this designed to either, fit against the cab beltline, or orient downward as a kinda of drain????

It fits against the cab beltline.
