I am taking the engine from my 1954 have it stripped down to the block and head. I have removed all clutch, and shifter links and have the mounts loosened. I took the ball cap off the transmission rear end per the 1954 Workshop Manual. It now instructs to push the ball cap back on the torque tube to access the trunnion connections. This baby aint "slippin' nowhere. There is a serrated collar at the rear that looks like a locking collar. Do I need to unscrew the collar to allow the entire ball cap to move along the torque tube? Please bear with me I've never worked with one of these "closed" tubes before. Thanks

Yes - The collar must be loosened to allow the ball / collar to slip on the shaft. Once it is back, you can unbolt and "slip" the joint. Watch out for the pint of oil / grime that is in the ball. BW
