The engine's worn out, so I'm planning to swap in a 283. Does anybody have casting numbers for a bell housing that works with the 283 in a '56 truck with 3 speed? Also, is the bellhousing for a car the same or different than a truck?
Thanks LT | | |

Welcome aboard. The V-8 truck bellhousing is different than the passenger car.
0.863 HOUSING, Flywheel and Clutch
55-59 COMM., UTIL. (8 cyl.)....... clutch (cast 3733373)................p/n 3742055
This is from the '59 parts book.
Around 61 or 62 they went to a hydraulic clutch that placed the slave cylinder on the passenger side of the bellhousing.
The easiest way to spot one of these is the truck bellhousing has reinforcing ribs on the two upper transmission bolt holes. Passenger doesn't have the ribs.
