When I spin my oil pump with a drill a get a steady 15 lbs indicated on the oil pressure gauge. Then when I put the distributor back in
(and I feel like it is bottoming out and engaging the slot in the oil pump) I get no indicated pressure when I crank the engine. This is on a newly rebuilt 216. I am seeing just the least bit of oil coming out of the holes in the rocker arms. Any thoughts?

How do you spin the oil pump with a drill?

If you remove the distributor (how?) Is it difficult to re-install the distributor in the correct position?

Thanks!

Dave: Yes, spin it with a drill and a large screwdriver shank. Remove the distributor like the manual says---ie mark the position of the rotor remove the bolt and pull it out. Seems to go right back into place

I'd vote that the distributor tang is still not engaging the oil pump correctly. I assume you see the rotor rotating?

My 235 has a metal collar for bolting the distributor to the block. if it's tightened too far down the distributor shaft, the tang won't reach the oil pump.

If yours is like this, loosen the collar before installing the distributor - move the rotor until it 'clicks' into the slot, THEN tighten the collar.

Assuming of course the 216 is like the 235 in this respect!

jgalt: I think you must be right. Yea, the rotor is turning because the engine will run. I'm going to try what you suggest again as I have done that already, but I still think it must not be engageing the slot of the pump

It sounds like you're seeing oil out of the rockers when cranking the engine , this indicates good dizzy to oil pump connection , remember the 216 is a very low pressure system and should not indicate oil pressure when cranking .

There is no problem so difficult it cannot be overcome by generous application of brute force & ignorance
