For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Apr 2001 Posts: 162 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2001 Posts: 162 | I have a 54 that was converted to 5 lug drums supposedly off of a 54 car before I got it.
I am switching to disc up front and have the kit from chevy duty to go on the truck spindles.
Is there a difference in the car vs truck spindles? Can the difference be measured? Is it a spindle size difference?
I guess the safe bet would be to find an extra set of truck spindles and then I can use the complete drum set up spindle and all on my 53 if I ever want to.
Just curious. Got spindles?

Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,878 | I believe the car has independent front suspension, and the truck an I-beam. The spindles themselves probably won't interchange? | | | | | Joined: Apr 2001 Posts: 162 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2001 Posts: 162 | Grigg,
I think you are correct. The hubs and drums will probably interchange. I'll let you know in a few days for sure.
Thanks,
Tim

Or do you buy a conversion kit for a car now that you have those hubs? So as to have the correct bolt pattern? | | | | | Joined: Apr 2001 Posts: 162 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2001 Posts: 162 | Thanks all. I believe I'm in good shape.
1. Remove the car hubs and drums 5 hole 4 3/4 from the truck spindles that are on the straight axle.
2. Save them for my 53 truck project.
3. Use the kit I got from Chevy Duty that uses the truck spindles, bracket in the kit, inner bearings in the kit, rotors, calipers, outer bearings, hoses, from parts store from 76 Monte Carlo.
Once again the Stovebolt team has come through.

i too was told to get 53-54 car drums to get a 5 on 4 3/4 set up in the front. i did but they wont mate up with my 49-50 backing plates.
my question for you guys, and bessie, will the truck backing plates from 51-54 work with my 53 car drums? any help would be great. i have to drive this thing to austin texas in 4 weeks and would like it to stop!! thanks! | | |
