I have a 54 that was converted to 5 lug drums supposedly off of a 54 car before I got it.

I am switching to disc up front and have the kit from chevy duty to go on the truck spindles.

Is there a difference in the car vs truck spindles? Can the difference be measured? Is it a spindle size difference?

I guess the safe bet would be to find an extra set of truck spindles and then I can use the complete drum set up spindle and all on my 53 if I ever want to.

Just curious. Got spindles?

Tim

I think the 53 and 54 car and truck hubs and brake drums will interchange only difference is the 5 and 6 lug desgin.

I believe the car has independent front suspension, and the truck an I-beam.
The spindles themselves probably won't interchange?

Grigg,

I think you are correct. The hubs and drums will probably interchange. I'll let you know in a few days for sure.

Thanks,

Tim

the spindle shaft it self is the same, its the angle degree on the design that is different, your alignment would be off if you interchange them.

yes Tim, if you have 5 bolt hubs on the stock axle they're from a car, don't lose them! - common way to do it since back in the day - the disc setup will work fine

Will the disk kit for the truck fit the car hubs?
Or do you buy a conversion kit for a car now that you have those hubs? So as to have the correct bolt pattern?

Thanks all. I believe I'm in good shape.

1. Remove the car hubs and drums 5 hole 4 3/4 from the truck spindles that are on the straight axle.

2. Save them for my 53 truck project.

3. Use the kit I got from Chevy Duty that uses the truck spindles, bracket in the kit, inner bearings in the kit, rotors, calipers, outer bearings, hoses, from parts store from 76 Monte Carlo.

Once again the Stovebolt team has come through.

i JUST joined this forum to ask questions about this very topic. i am building a little hot rod truck and am using what i was told was a 51 chevy front end. i later am finding out it is 50 or older.

i too was told to get 53-54 car drums to get a 5 on 4 3/4 set up in the front. i did but they wont mate up with my 49-50 backing plates.

my question for you guys, and bessie, will the truck backing plates from 51-54 work with my 53 car drums?
any help would be great. i have to drive this thing to austin texas in 4 weeks and would like it to stop!! thanks!
