I have been looking high and low for the bolt hole locations to drill on the left hand bed side of my pickup bed in order to bolt on the spare tire carrier.
If someone has a stock Advance Design short bed that originally came with the spare carrier, could you measure where the bolt holes should be drilled for me?
I have found a spare tire fender and the carrier but would really like to have those dimensions to put the spare unit in its original location.
My truck is a 1952 Chevy 1/2 ton shortbed.
Thanks all.

I have two 1954 1/2 Chevrolet trucks with what I think are original/stock spare tire carriers, but my reference points for the measurements would not help you (the beds are different).
If you are looking for a stock/original set-up with a bed like yours, you want a measurement from a 1953 3100 (for 52 Chebby's 1952 3100) or from a 1953 3600 (for Denny's 1950 3600).
Have you checked in the gallery - maybe send a message to someone with that setup? | | | | | Joined: Jul 2002 Posts: 102 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jul 2002 Posts: 102 | 52 Chebby, I just measured the carrier on my 53. I took my measurements on the angled top part of the bed side. I figured if you had any proper dimensions, locate them and then transfer the other holes from the carrier. Start at the front of the angled top and the first hole, to the center, is 5" and the second hole is 10 1/2" from that center, or 15 1/2" from the front. Now, measuring the other direction, from where the bend of the vertical side meets the angle, that dimension is 1 3/4". Clear as mud? If that doesn't make since, reply back and I'll try to clarify.

The thing about this board is some people only check it now and then, or only at work... or only on Saturday morning. There have been several guys who used to be very regular posters when they were ripping their trucks apart, who don't come around as much because they finished their trucks for the most part. However, many of them took lots of pictures, so if you search around and find their posts, you can email or message them for their pictures. If they have them, most people are very willing to send them along. This is all part of the leg work of researching old truck stuff. It never really ends... -W | | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 | Sorry Woo if I'm a bother to you, I sure would appreciate it if you, would pull the tire from your, '50, 3604 and snap a picture of it for me!! I would not have posted what I did had I not spent the last four months looking for a picture of an original factory side mount for a '50, 3600. I don't want to see the tire, I want to see the mount/tubing/channels/braces, etc., In other words, I want to see HOW the factory mount is made so I can duplicate it. I spend several hours a day, every day on the bolt, researching information for my restoration, a lot of it is spent searching for past opinions/post/threads/pictures. In addition I have been searching the VCCA archives. The best I have come up with are the drawings in the Assembly Manual and they are of a '53.
Canada, if you check in the Assembly Manual Section 10, sheet 3.00 there are some pretty detailed drawings with dimensions, of the side mount for a '53, 3104.

If you are looking at the 1947-55 Factory Assembly Manual, Section 10; Sheet 3, that is a drawing for a 54/55 bed.
1953 was the first year for a side-mount tire carrier on a 1/2 ton truck and I think that 1953 was also the first year for larger pickup trucks (if I am wrong, someone will correct me).
You did ask for a picture "for an original factory side mount for a '50 3600". Most likely you have already searched the 1953 long-bed pickups in the gallery and there are no side-mounts. So, a picture from an earlier truck fitted with a non-factory side carrier would be helpful to you.

Bolt the tire/wheel to the bracket, if finish painted put several layers of tape on the bed to prevent scratches, have a couple buddies hold it to where it looks just right in relation to the pocket in the fender, mark and drill. It will be so close to factory not even judges would know. We relocate or alter brackets when the owner uses modern tire/wheel combos since the old 6.00-16's or 6.50-16's were tall and skinny and a modern tire looks crappy as far as tire to pocket clearance is concerned when mounted on the stock bracket. There is a backing plate and angle bracket for the inside of the bed to prevent cracking around the bolts, be sure to use them.

Obviously they took the drawings for the new model year, which were drawn the year previous. I am not looking for just any old side mount for mine, I have a sturdy channel iron with two studs, side mount already welded in place on the driver side that holds my 7.00-15 bias ply just fine. I'm going to cut the mount off when I do the body work this summer and wanted to install a mount that was a copy of a factory mount. I have seen one ‘53 that had a factory mount. Looking behind the tire it looked like it consisted of a few tubular brackets, and a couple of angles with slotted holes, but the guy wouldn’t take the tire off so I could photograph it. Seems to be the story from everyone that has one. I don’t understand what the problem is with popping off two lug nuts for a thirty second picture taking session. You bring up an interesting point, that '53 was the first year for the side mount. I had not heard that before, no doubt if that is true I will stop asking for a picture of one. If I were the owner of a 1950, 3604 in '53 or '54 the first time I saw the side mount, you'd find me down at the Chevy parts counter ordering a side mount. I'm sure that it wouldn't take much to adapt it to my pickup. For 1950, you say that’s not factory original! It’s the same old story, original to what time period of the truck. Most of the accessories were not factory original, such as the visors, inside mirror, fog lights, radio, spotlight, and on and on. Old Whitey was our new car guy and that’s all he did was install accessories, Accessories were added by most owners over the life of the truck, so it's not to far fetched to think that a "Genuine GM" Chevy side mount was one of the improvements/upgrades. I know this to be true because I was a Chevy parts man from 1959 to ’64 and sold a ton of accessories and parts that people added to their rides. We even ordered and installed accessories from the Western Auto and local Autoparts stores if the customer wanted something that Chevy didn’t make. The concept of fabricating a part to look like a factory part is difficult for some people to understand. I hang with a bunch of guy that build street rods and they can’t understand spending days and weeks restoring a Huck brake system when Summit or the like sells a disc brake kit to upgrade your project. Small detail, but when I look behind the side mount on my truck, I’m gonna see a tubular bracket screwed to the box. And one more thing, under the bed I will have a spare rim mounted on the drop down, slide out carrier. Denny Graham

Some people have a hard time visualizing things from text, I'm one of them. As the old saying goes, "a picture is worth a 1000 words". I had a hard time learning just from books in the one room schoolhouse. I picked up most of my know how in shop class from the pictures in Car Craft, Honk, Rod & Custom, etc., that I was hiding in the folds of my textbook. Believe me when I say I read you post, even though it wasn't applicable in my case. I spend a lot of time here and appreciate the effort that goes into researching a subject for the other guy. When I post a comment or pictures it's not to boost my ego, I'm just trying to share what I learned with the forum and help the next guy avoid the mistakes that I made. A lot of the time I will grab an idea and run with it. Most of us have more than enough to read as it is, just to keep up with the daily posts. I refrain from posting back just to avoid cluttering up the thread with, Thank You, Sincerely Grateful, Mochas Grazes, etc., If Chubby took you’re measurements out to the bed and laid them out, I'm sure his carrier would fit perfectly. Since he taint replied back about the comments here I would assume that he is out in the garage bolting the carrier and fender on as we speak. Denny Graham Sandwich, IL
