I am just curious if the harmonic balancer off of my 1953 216 will work on a 1959 261 without any modifications?

A 216 damper will press on a 235/261, but the 216 damper is smaller and a pound or two lighter,it may not be able to do the job in the long run. But, I hear there are guys doing this with no problems, yet.

Truckedup,

Thanks for the reply, I may just try it and if I have problems, then I can always get one from the Stovebolt Engine Co. or someone like that. Wouldn't I need to shorten the belt and would it cause charging problems for the alternator or not? What problems do you know of people having with the smaller balancer? Thanks and Happy Easter. -Shane

Check your belt width. Some 216s used a 5/8" wide belt, the later 235s had a skinnier belt. If you tried to use a 216 balancer w/ a 5/8" belt, the belt wouldn't fit the '54-later 235 water pump and alternator pulleys.

The smaller dia balancer only causes charging problems below 1,000 rpm with an alternator. I'm running a '54 1st series 7/16" belt 235 balancer on a 2nd series 235. The 1st series 235s had slightly smaller pulleys than later ones.
