So I have been given a straight six as a gift for my AD truck build. In an effort to learn what I can about it before tearing it down and having the machine shop give it the old once over I wrote down the serial numbers and the casting numbers. The casting nos. tell me it's a 250 from 66-84 the particularly 73 or 83. I know so little about 6s that I couldn't tell you the difference between the two if it was stamped on the valve cover. So can anybody glean anything from these:

I appreciate your help.
Thanks- Andy

Online 6 cylinder info seems hard to find. A Hollander Interchange Manual could tell you just what you have, but mine only goes to '72. With only limited info online, I saw CCA as a 250 in a '73 Nova w/Powerglide and as a 250 in a '77 Nova w/TH350. You can also find date codes on many of your engine parts. (Example *A173* = January 1, 1973). List your date codes and we can help you further.

Date Code on block should be just above starter, almost hidden behind it.

Thanks guys. I don't have easy access to the block as it's in Broadhead Wisconsin with the truck it's going into. The rent is free and the guy lets me use his tools so... All the same the stuff chuckthetruck tossed out looks reasonable to me.

Thanks again
-Andy
