I have a stock 283 v-8 in a 67 chevy truck.

It is equipped with a stock 2barrel Rochestor Carb.
It has been rebuilt twice and the float intermittently sticks.
I am thinking about upgrading to a four barrel carb.
I'd like to hear some opinions and testamonials.

What's good, what's bad, what's easy?

You will have to replace the intake manifold to use a 4 bbl. Stock intakes from 350's are plentiful, you can also go with an Edelbrock Performer intake, it gives better air flow than stock, raised my vacuum 2". You can usually get a used one in the $50 price range. For a carb 500 to 600 cfm will be a good match. You can go with a Holley or Edelbrock with vacuum secondaries for $220-250 for a factory rebuild. You can also go with the quadrajet and mechanical secondaries, which will get you better highway milage, but the Rochester q-jet used a poor quality metal in their castings, which wears around the throttle shaft and leaks. Edelbrock makes a new q-jet, but it's around $450.

Fred,
Thanks for the info. Some of this carb stuff is over my head. I rebuilt a few VW bug carbs which are a step above the lawnmower carbs I have played with. I rebuilt this rochester on my chevy truck (which might explain why the float sticks) seems easy but, I in know way know it all.
I just want the truck to run well. It doen'st have to win races, I just drive it to have fun.

I have a 350, mild cam, 327 heads which were on when I bought the truck. It had a q-jet that was beyond worn out. I put on the Performer intake, which raised my vacuum 2", more vacuum is good for torque. I also put on a 600 cfm Holley. I went in to buy an Edelbrock, my parts guy had the Holley on the shelf and cut the price of the Holley to match. Eventually, I would like to buy the Edelbrock q-jet, but that's down the road a ways.

I had one of Barry Grant's Road Demons on the 350 in my Nova and it worked great! It's a nice carb, looks good, tunes easy and works great. The Road Demon is cheaper than the other Demon carbs. I think it's rated at 625 or 650 cfm with vacuum secondarys and electric choke. Go for it!!
