Hey guys... I got a couple of questions. Hopefully not too stupid. I've got a 1949 1 ton I'm restoring, or I've been told it's a 1 ton.(Maybe a 3/4 ton) There are no decals or emblams stating 3100, 3600, etc. I've tried decoding the serial number, but my serial number is all numbers (no letters) and won't work with any of the decoding sites I've found. The truck was built in Canada... if that matters. The original aluminum serial number plate is still riveted to the door post. I also found what appears to be a tire inflater behind the seat. Looks like it screws into a spark plug hole...? I've been told this is something that came with the truck. Is this true? Thanks for the help guys!

Welcome to the Stovebolt Page fishbone!

First of all, the serial number should be all numbers. The first number states the year (1=1951). The second and third digits state the make and the series (94=GMC 1 ton). Fourth and fifth digits tell the body style (33=cab with chassis). The remaining 5 digits identify the particular truck (set it apart from the rest).

As for you tire inflator. Got any pictures, never heard of one from the factory before (let alone with something that looks like it could screw into a spark plug hole).

Good Luck.

Fishbone;
Welcome. Is it a Chevy or a GMC? Pickup? Single or dual drive wheels? Nothing stupid about your questions, just not enough details. That spark plug tire inflator isn't a factory thing. They were available aftermarket some years ago. If you do use it, be sure to do so with your throttle wide open and your ignition off, or you'll be packing an air/fuel vapour in your tire. If it got too hot, well . . I'd like to see what would happen, but not on my truck! Mine is a 1-ton, by the way. Click on the underlined link below.

They used to sell the tire inflators that screwed into the spark plug hole at Canadian Tire years ago. Welcome to the bolt. Bob T

I don't know if its the same in 1949, but the 1940 Canadian 1 ton is equivalent to the US built 3/4 Ton Special model.

See my 1940 Canadian GMC:

:rolleyes: Rusty grin

Ahh the vision. I never thought of a tire inflator from the compression of an engine. That's real neat. Still wondering if anyone has any pictures.
