I did a compression check of the engine last night and all the cylinders checked out except the secound from the rear of the engine. It had zero compression. The engine starts fine and runs well. What could be the problem? It is a 57 model, 235.

Then apply air to the sparkplug hole. listien for air comming out of carb , tailpipe, and crankcase- crankcase will have some no mater what, but if you are not getting any compression it should be alot. other places should have very little or none. this could be a stuck valve. BUT YOU SAY IT RUNS SMOOTH? HMMMMM. CHECK YOUR COMPRESSION GUAGE. could be bad valve. not keeping pressure.

I don't think it is your gauge, if it was it would show bad readings on more than just one cylinder. You say that the engine runs good, but it may not be as good as you think. I had a 350 in my C10 and it also ran good, or at least that is what I thought until it started giving me trouble. Did a complete engine check and found bad rings, burnt valves, plenty on "slop" in the timing chain and gears (don't know how it ever stayed in time) and oil pump screen was almost totally blocked with junk. I installed a new engine recently and I can't believe how I ever thought the old engine was ok. Just my 2 cents.

It starts as easily as always, though it does run a little rougher than normal. That is why I did the compression check. I did the body work on my truck and much of the mechanical work, but I have no experience tearing into the motor. Is a valve job dificult to do on the 235? Any idea as to the possible problem and what should be done will be greately appreciated.

That will help determine whether rings or valves. Redo the compression test and put about 5 cc of trans fluid in the spark plug hole before taking your reading. Use the same amount in every cylinder for uniform readings Bad valves will not increase the PSI value. Worn rings will increase PSI Values. You will get a 5-10 PSI increase with good rings and 30-40 or more with bad rings. Try the local drugstore for a syringe like many use for their kids liquid medicine.
CAUTION USING MORE FLUID OR HEAVIER WEIGHT FLUID CAN CAUSE SERIOUS ENGINE DAMAGE!
