Are there any good pics online of the mounting brackets for the 235 external oil canister? I have a canister,where can I find the bracket?

Put an ad in the Swapmeet section & you may get lucky on this part.

Mine is held onto the intake manifold with two U bolts.

Don't know if you have a factory assembly manual but according to the 58 manual the filter is not not mounted perpendicular. Think the top is tilted 8 degrees away from the engine Don't know how important it would be ( except to some anal judge in a show ) but there must have been a reason I guess.

That is very interesting. I just took my filter off to do some headwork and thought the previous owner had been sloppy. I thought, as I took it off that at least I would put it back on straight. Duh

I wonder if the angle is with the exit tube uphill from the lowest point. This would aid in collection of heavier items since they don't want to go uphill. Thanks, I don't think I would have checked my manual for it's installation.

The year of the 235 engine might be important to the installation and the type of filter. I think that the 261 engine changed in 1958 (58-62) to a full-flow oil filter. I hope that someone will comment on this, especially if the same thing in true for the 235 engine.

If Eugene has a '55 235 engine, the filter canister is most likely installed as in previous years. My 1953 AC instructions does not state/show anything about an 8 degree tilt.

By the way, I understand that an engine with full-flow oil filtration should not use the old canister filters that were used on the by-pass oil filtration engines (pre-'58?).

Tim Can't speak to other years or displacements. Just thought it might be useful for him to check before installation . As to the filter elements I have had two guys tell me in all seriousness that back in the day some guys used rolls of toilet paper in their canisters . Probably not up to factory specs but certainly cheap

The 235 thru '61 did not have even a bypass filter as standard. At least on pickups.

Frantz sold a canister that took toilet paper. Somebody here or on another old truck page was looking for one.

i dunno, toilet paper filter? I have heard of em, but sounds crappy to me! :p

I will just replace the cartidge in my by-pass filter ('54 235) and adapt to a spin-on Fram Filter in my full-flow system ('60 261).

I have 2 trucks, the 1952 has the filter mounted with 2 ubolts. the 1953 has a flat base and is mounted on the firewall. I understand there were a couple of manufactures so it depends on what you have. Wix was one AC was another and AC Delco was another. Don't know if there were any more. Chevy engine orange is real close to the original color of the AC delco.

correction, thats Wix and AC DElco, I had ac down twice.

I've got an extra canister w/u-bolts sitting in the garage. Make me an offer if you are intersted.

There were many variations on the filters. Fram was the most popular. Some had larger fittings for the full flow 261. Some used tp, which doesn't do much for me. My Fram takes a Wix 51006 element, about $10 locally.
