I have a 59 stepside with the spare tire mounted on the driver's side. All I have seen , up till now, are mounted on the driver's side. I just spotted a 58 with the tire mounted on the pass. side. Were these rare and were they stock? Could it be ordered as an option either way? Anyone care to respond. Thanks.

the book lists RPO341, Side Mounted Wheel Carrier, as "Left-Hand Side Only"

but I've seen'em with spares on both sides - either a special order or home made, which isn't hard

You can cut the indent part out of another L.H 55-66 fender and weld in the RH fender after it is cut out and you will have dual mounts, if you are good enough body man.

My '57 GMC 3804 had the passenger side spare tire carrier, while my '59 3200 had the driver's side one.

Because of the box length (9 feet), the '57 didn't have the dimple in the fender (wasn't needed!). The mount did not look like it was supplied by the factory, but looked home-made sometime in the past!.

Could it be that GMC mounted thiers on the right? I seem to recall reading somewhere that that was one of the diffences between Chevy and GMC in the '20s and '30s. Perhaps it continued after WW2?
