Hi,

We have a 53 3800 panel truck that is missing the VIN plate. Is the VIN number stamped on the frame somewhere? I have a 51 dodge truck that had the frame stamped so I would hope that Chevrolet would have had the same practice at that time!

Any suggestions on where to look would be greatly appreciated.

I have the same problem. No VIN plate and no title. I have the advanced design and your tech says there's no vin # on the frane. What to do?

Your answer is in the link above. Most states used the engine number pre 56. Your tag office can tell you, or direct you to who can tell you, which number you need.

Acting on the information from the forum I scrubbed and scrapped clean the boss beside the distributor looking for a number. There isn't one. All thats there are the machining marks like I would expect to see from the flycutter when the boss was machined at the factory.

Either someone has ground off the numbers (although the boss is nice and flat) or this engine never had numbers.

I know from research on the body that the panel truck is definitely a 1953 3805 1-ton panel. It was originally configured as a bus with 3 windows along each side. You can see pictures at http://www.141.com/triumphs look for the link to the 53 panel on the left.

Based on the block casting number of 3764476 it appears to be a 1956 to 1962 235 ci engine.

I checked with the motor vehicle department here in Arkansas and they told me in 1953 they used the engine number for the title.

Kinda puts me back to square one since this truck has NO numbers.

You might say I'm at a loss as to what to do at the moment.

that boss is frequently machined flat when an engine is rebuilt - next alternative is to use a title service that can get you a title for a price

I didn't know that Bill. That does suck Brad. I guess if I was in that situation I would call the MV back & ask what their process is for titling a vehicle that's had the engine number removed. They've certainly had similar situations in the past. They may direct you to a title service like Bill mentioned. Good luck.
