Directly below the tail gate on my '41 3/4 ton and right in the center of the rear panel is an old worn out hole. It looks like a guide hole for a crank used to lower the spare tire from under the bed. I have looked at what is left of the original under bed spare tire mount and at the catalog photos and do not see anything that looks like a small winch mechanism or any thing to mount one. So.. I'm wondering what this hole was used for.

Kip's41,

I don't remember that hole on my truck when I was working on the tail, I will look tonight when I get home and see if I can figure out what it is.

Kip's41,

I am not sure, but it might be where the cobs come out...was this truck ever registered in Iowa? wink

Hey Kip,... Thats were the spare tire bracket secured with a threaded rod with the other end hooked into that hole. You either spun the wing nut off the threaded end and dropped the bracket with the spare or you had the optional spare tire lock that you took off and dropped the spare down. Hope that helps.

Kip's41,

The only hole I found under my tailgate was where my reverse light is mounted. I am not sure if this is an aftermarket item or if it came with a reverse light. Other than that I don't have anything else.
Hope this helps.

I guess its down to determining between Atomarc and Tweak. So unless they grow very small corn in Iowa (the hole was probably ¾” new) I’ll have to go with Tweak’s answer.

Once again thanks for the info 
