I have procured a Suburban gas tank for my '67 1/2 ton Chevy truck. The truck has a short stepside box on it. After some preliminary measurements it looks like I will have to move the rear cross member closer to the rear bumper.
Although I am not too squeamish about the required fabrication and etc. - I would appreciate any suggestions or comments from others who have already been down this path.

i'm also working on a gas tank relocation; for my '66 shortbed.
seems the tanks i find available are all to large to fit my bed, what are the dimensions of your tank? where did you get it?

No filler through the floor. It was a very clean installation and was not noticable from the outside of the bed.

To answer your question Bill the tank measures
28"x29"x10".
The way I want to situate it, the 28" will go between the frame rails. It is the 29" length that is giving me trouble. There is a small round crossbar that will have to go - that gices me no heartburn at all. After that, the last crossmember on the frame is in the way.
What I am considering is either removing the crossmember completly and fabbing a new one from heavy wall square tubing, or relocating the stock crossmember further back.
I occasionaly pull trailers - anything from a single axle 5x10 utility trailer to a 2 horse
side by side - so strength is potentially an issue.
