I just purchased an old stovebolt almost 2000 miles away from where I live, so I thought I should get a little extra insurance on it for the trip home. My hauler said that it would be a good ideal. I'm sure that this is a topic that comes up often, but I'm new on the stovebolt scene and have been watching the forum only a couple weeks or more. Where do most of you guys buy insurance for these old vehicles?

If you are not going to use the truck a lot, your best bet would probably be antique vehicle insurance.
Talk to your insurance agent about it. | | | | Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 2,952 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 2,952 | We have a state owned insurance company (no competition) and they have a Collector insurance program. The rules are the vehicle must be 25 years old and in original, or restored to original condition. The insurance premiums are very good, about $200 per year. The vehicle must be pleasure use only. They are very picky about the vehicle's condition. To get this insurance you must supply about 10 photos. If you fudge the photos and hide the blemishes and there is an accident, they will inspect your vehicle and void the insurance. There is in my opinion a lot of leeway in the term original condition. I had Collector insurance on my 49 until last year when I voluntarily removed it because my paint was faded and blemished in spots. Having done that I regularly see Collector cars that are recently insured and in poorer shape, including rust out, than my truck. I should mention that there are also 'whistle blowers' who check these vehicles for authenticity and anonymously report them. I think that for the $600 I am now paying, which is fairly high for the driving I do, is still better than having the hassles with the insurance company and those informers. | | | | Joined: Jul 2005 Posts: 1,158 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Jul 2005 Posts: 1,158 | Hagerty wouldn't insure me because my truck was too ugly.
FYI.
I'm currently using AAA. It's not agreed value, but book value is a few hundred more than what I've got into it, so it's all good.
In a few years, after I've got it prettied up a little, I'll try Hagerty again.
As for comprehensive coverage for the trip... I'm not sure who can do that for you. Have you checked with your regular agent? | | | | Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 3,374 Moderator - The Electrical Bay | Moderator - The Electrical Bay Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 3,374 | I've got Hagerty, on my old truck, and it's ugly, they would have signed on The Binder too, but I decided not to, since it is not yet roadworthy.

Then we switched to Progressive (JC Taylor renewal process got complicated). Now we have Haggerty, too. I like them the best so far. Of course, we haven't had to use them but the company has been easy to work with in just *getting* the insurance.
But there is a good list on the Lots O Links page.

That must have been one ugly truck. Hagerty has insured my unrestored trucks and a truck that was apart for restoration. I set the value and sent photos in email. I have not had to use any of their services except road-service - quick response, no questions, no charge, no hassle. | | | | Joined: Jun 2005 Posts: 887 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2005 Posts: 887 | I'm getting close to finishing my truck and am starting to think about insurance. From previous threads on this topic it seems like you should get 'appraised value' and not 'stated value' because with stated value if you have a claim they don't pay your stated value, they give you blue book. If you've spent 20k rodding or restoring your truck, book value wouldn't come close to making you happy. Also, the cost to repair any sort of minor fender bender will exceed the 3/4 of the book value of an old truck, so they'll total you out and give you the 3/4 of book.

Truck was insured for $12000 & Vette $22000 Very pleased. http://community.webshots.com/user/46metal | | | | Joined: Aug 2006 Posts: 18 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Aug 2006 Posts: 18 | Thanks you all, for the "heads up" on name's and personal experiences with the different auto insurance agents. It seem that there is not really any one insurance company that stands out above the rest. I checked with my personal agent, and he doesn't really want to bother with my little newly acquired 46. His would be quite expensive for no more than I would be driving it. Looks like it's going to be either Hagerty's or J C Taylors for now! There's been some discussion on this subject at the ATHS forums, too.
It's not bad if you just have the big Truck as a collector truck (i.e., toy) but if you actually plan on working the truck at all ...

The exact words out of the underwriter's mouth were, "Based on the condition of your truck, we would prefer not to insure it at this time." It does need a little body work (and that fender needs fixing) and some paint. I think that the flatbed is an issue, too. | | | | Joined: Jan 2002 Posts: 622 Member | Member Joined: Jan 2002 Posts: 622 | I have my cars and Harley insured through Progressive and Geico.
