My Carter W-1 is leaking badly through both sides where the throttle shaft goes through the body. Can it be re-bushed? How is this done?

Remove throttle plate screws and accelerator pump linkage. Remove throttle shaft. Take throttle plate (or body, if that's the case) to machine shop. Have them ream and re-bush to fit throttle shaft. Install shaft, throttle plate and screws (make sure throttle plate is "centered" in it's bore, as throttle plates are usually slightly oval). Support shaft and lightly "stake" over the screws so they don't fall out (just ask G.L.!). Attach accelerator pump linkage.
Re-install carb. on engine, start and adjust mixture when engine is warm.

Now you will have a smooth idle with no vacuum leak at the throttle shaft and no fuel leak either!!

Hey thanks GMC248! That about answers my question. Looks like I have to have a machine shop do the rebush huh? Any ideas how much this costs?

Will be nice to solve all these vac leaks. Was so bad it wasnt even sucking gas to the cylinders...throttle shaft, wipers, manifold gaskets etc..

I'm not absolutely sure, but I think $40-50 bucks......Just call around and see. Might get a better deal if you have a carburetor rebuilder in your area, since that's all they do.
