welcome to the garage junior!
what makes you say "This VIN is correct"??
the first digit should be "J" for a 3/4T conventional cab [not an O listed], and 3406, being the model number, indicates a forward control suburban!

check here , you'll see it doesn't compute

the form of the vin should be
1st digit = weight and length - H[1/2T] or J[3/4]
next 4 = model, 34 is forward control, 06 = burb
the F = assembled in Flint
255= 2nd series 1955
not sure about the XA, it'll be special egine/trans details

where is the number located on the truck?

edit: ahhh! the "vin" is on yer title, not on the truck, that number is an engine number - O340640 is the engine sequence #, F=Flint, 255= 55 2nd, XA=trans/application

The vinis on the A pillar, about 1/2 way up from the dash to the roof. It'll also be stamped on the frame, next to the steering box. It should read-Series,H=1/2 short, M=1/2 long, J=3/4, L=1 ton.Next is year-255, then assembly plant,A=Atlanta,B=Baltimore,F=Flint, J=Janesville,K=Kansas City,L=Los Angeles, N=Norwood, O=Oakland, S=St. Louis, T=Tarrytown. The last 6 digits are the sequence number, starting with 01001. The XA code on the engine is for 3/4 ton with manual trans, 235 123 hp, 7.5 copression ratio.

Thanks men, Thats what I think also Tim. The numbers seem all jumbled. The vin plate on the pillar ran away 3 years ago (someone wanted it more than I did I guess) so all I can go by is the registrations dating back to '56. I'll check next to the steering box Bill. Thanks! Hey! when can I go from New Guy to wing nut??? Jim

To build on what Red said. Most states used the engine number as the vin through 1955. If the number you stated is the one on the title look at the raised boss behind & below the distributer on your engine. You may need to scrape some gunk off. You will probably find the number stamped there. I would highly recommend calling 1-800-222-1020 to get a "restoration packet" from GM. It's free in the US. The packet will contain all of the information they have on your truck including how to locate and decode the VIN. You will need the VIN number from your title when you call.
