I'm looking to do the same thing this person has done with their CD player. Right now, I have a $200 cd player sitting in a tray on my floorboard. Clearly this is not safe equipment-wise or theft-wise. So I was looking around and this caught my eye. I would love to do it, but thought I should get any tips or suggestions, if anyone has any. well what i did with my 53 i put under the seat and had the orig. in its place

I made an insert that fit into the glove box and installed the stereo there. I could close the glove box door and no one knew it was there.

mine won't fit in the dash. It's a DIN style, and my original was a shaft style radio. I would, but I don't want to cut up the dash. Not a fan of butchering my truck.

I also thought about putting it in the glovebox, but I don't want to drive around with my glovebox door down when I want to listen to the radio.

And last, believe it or not, I thought a lot about putting it under the seat when I got it. But I woudln't be able to see the sceen, and that would be a hassle.

it WILL fit in the dash, you just need a Dremel or a cut-off wheel, then it is right in front of you, easy to operate & you are ont endangering other's lives by fiddling w/something you cannot see. Is your truck real rare or something?? Never understood the "don't wanna cut it", but I need tunes idea. Cut it, measure 3times, make it look right,,we ain't going back to AM or cassette tapes anytime soon,,my .02,,brian I cut this one,,

thanks Hardy,, they don't have to have a hole large enough for a TV,,if you take your time & cut carefully it is no problem. It could also ber welded back up. I feel it blends in well,,brian

If you do cut it, you should save and keep track of the pieces you take out to weld them back in some day. You could coat them in wd-40 or other grease, put them in a zip lock and tape them under the dash.

I've seen boxes to put stereos in that bolt to the bottom of your dash, then you don't cut anything. If you do that you could put a delete plate where the original stereo goes.

I've seen those in AD's under the dash and they look nice. If you get the box before you start the restoration you can paint it the color of the dash before you mount it and that'll help it blend in a little. Those boxes are about $40 from a vendor or $20 on ebay, here's a link:

Some people put the stereo in the glove box, but like you, I need the glove box for other things.

I saw one truck where they put in a 18-wheeler style shelf above the windsheild with the stereo a couple of cubby-holes and the speakers. That ain't for me in my '51 but in a suburban or something maybe...

I've seen people modify the radio speaker cover grill so that it has a hinge and they put the radio behind that, then when it's shut it looks like there is no radio. Like the glove box, you'd have to drive around with that one open too, so it may not work for you.

There are some stereos that have the tuner readout on the rear view mirror. I've seen a few for auction on e-bay and am looking for one. Until then I'm going with the box under the dash so I don't cut anything or have to drive around with the glovebox/speaker grill open.

The other thing I'd like to do is get a USB ready shaft-style stereo that fits in the original spot and looks sort of original, and then hook it up to an external harddrive with all my music in MP3 format that I'll mount under the seat with the amps and sub-woofers. That way it looks stock, fits in the stock location and has all my music and I don't have to hook up the I-pod or change out cd's. I don't think anyone is making those yet and I can't afford the shop that'll take an original radio and put modern guts in it.

My '54 GMC 100 is an original 6 volt system. Does anyone know of a good AM/FM that is 6 volt?
Also plan on a Vintage Air Conditioner, but need that to be 6 volts too. Any answers?

I couldn't see hacking up my dash. I have a radio with a removable face plate and never lock the truck. I simply mounted it under the dash. No one has touched it. Then again, most people don't figure to find a good radio in an old truck like mine. The face plate is only on the radio when I play it. Sometimes I just like to hear the sound of the truck.

I've got a 6v to 12v converter that worked fine before I converted to 12v. I think I paid $40 from J. Carter. Several other vendors sell them also and you might even find something at radio shack that'll work so you can use any 12v shaft style radio in your 6v truck. If you mount under the dash with the converter you could also use any DIN style stereo.
