I have a project that I need to place some custom lettering. It is not on my truck but I'm still posting it here because I believe this kind of work could be related to rebuilding a speedometer or re-lettering stuff on the dashboard.

I'm looking at applying 1 inch lettering over plain black paint. After lettering, I'd paint a clear sealer over it. Anyone know where I'd even look for this type of product?

Many years ago I had some clear plastic sheets (8.5 x 11) that had tiny black letters/numbers that I used to put markings on guages. What I need is way bigger. Thanks for any references & suggestions you could provide.

A decal company could make you either stencils to paint with or decals of the letters you want to put on. Thats what many body shops do for graphics they paint onto cars. I'd call your friendly local body shop guy, if you know one, and ask for a reference. If not, try your mechanic or maybe the yellow pages for a sign company or graphic design company. If you talk to three or four people eventually you'll get to the right persons.

If you just want standard stencils you could try an art supply shop or architecture supply place or even arts and crafts store.
