#21051 05/16/2004 12:45 AM | Joined: Nov 2003 Posts: 7 Junior Member | | Junior Member Joined: Nov 2003 Posts: 7 | I have a 1954 GMC 100 series truck. When I purchased it the previous owner told me that the rear end was not the original. I believe he told me it was out of a 1963 Chevy.
Took the drums off today and it does remind me of my 63 Impala, but that was about 25 years ago so I could be wrong.
I would like to know if anyone has any tips on identifying the rear end so I can purchase some brake parts. Looked the rear end over and could only find a casting number of GM 82.

He takes the brake book and compared the shoe to other pictures of shoes and then pulls a sample to match mine. He is pretty good at it and usually only takes him 10 minutes to match mine up. Then he gives me the year range of the rearend that I'm working with.

I had the same trials with my mystery rear end that you are having. I eventualy found mine to be from a 1957 chevy car. I believe that axles like mine were produced into the early `60s. So it is possible that your axle might look like mine. Mine has a welded on back cover. On the pumpkin housing, to the left of the large GM letters there is a casting number with 8 digits. Above this casting number, there is a letter and 3 numbers. This is the date code. Mine is A297. This translates to Jan 29, 1957. If you can find similar numbers on you axle, then it will be easier to indentify it.
Note: I has to scrub off 45 years of hard grime to find the date code. | | |
