| | | | Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 299 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 299 | Every time I see a speedo head for sale at a swapmeet, the numbers on the odometer are either faded or flaking off.I see you can buy new ones to stick on, but do they stay on and can you put them on straight? Today I tore apart a speedometer from a 74 Monte Carlo and saw that the only difference is the colour(black instead of white numbers) and the gear on the Monte is a worm instead of the straight gear on the 53.As I further examine the 53 speedo head I noticed that I could actually fit the 74 odometer on the top/opposite side of the needle.This placed the odometer numbers above the needle instead of below.I think this is an unnoticable change.My question is ,if the 74 Monte Carlo is odometer can be used in a 53 Chev pick up, what else would fit? You're right. Later model speedo guts are about the same as earlier units. They have the same tumblers and have those little clock-spring thingies and everything else. I have a couple of them in a box just in case. The only difference I've noticed is that the older units have threads, and later ones have a shove-on-til-it-clicks speedo cable attachment. | | |
